Vanadium mining and tech firm Australian Vanadium Limited (AVL), along with AVL subsidiary VSUN Energy, have signed an MoU with aluminum giant Alcoa to evaluate the use of a vanadium flow battery to support Alcoa’s refinery operations.
The collaboration will assess the technical and commercial feasibility of a VFB system with a nominal capacity of 50–80 MW and a storage duration of six to eight hours.
Indian iron-air startup Meine Electric said its battery has been selected for a pilot project at NTPC Simhadri Thermal Power Station in Andhra Pradesh. The project will evaluate the tech under utility-scale operating conditions.
Per Meine Electric, its application enables a six-hour charge and 18-hour discharge.
