ESS Leaps Closer to Baseload Power
Iron Flow LDES manufacturer ESS has reached multiple key technical milestones significantly ahead of schedule.
- Per a company announcement, results demonstrate a 12 to 17 hour power duration – extending duration for less than $90/kWh.
- ESS estimates that its achievements have accelerated the roadmap by 18 months, and represent a 6.7% charge time improvement and 6.3% additional input energy per day at standard conditions.
- These advancements bring the firm significantly closer to its goal of delivering baseload power.
Fresh DOE Funding
The US Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity has announced funding of up to $15 million toward three storage technologies, two in the aqueous battery space:
- $4.1 million to iron – salt LDS manufacturer Inlyte Energy
- $5 million to Long Hill Energy Partners to deploy Quino Energy’s organic quinone flow battery.
- $5 million to Binghamton University towards a bio-mineralized lithium mixed-metal phosphate grid-scale BESS.
Notably, the DOE announcement highlights the projects’ ability to “support critical facilities and infrastructure during a power outage or other emergency” – a shift from the renewables and jobs creation language of the Biden administration.
