AI’s Aqueous Energy Storage Needs
Two stories highlight the role new battery technologies are set to play in energy-hungry data centers for AI — with spotlights on Eos Energy Enterprises, Form Energy, and XL Batteries.
- From Latitude Media: How Fervo, Constellation, and Form Energy are racing to power AI — “Within two years, [Form Energy] went from trying to explain the value of attributes like reliability and round-the-clock availability to…fielding calls from utilities and developers who wanted gigawatts of capacity as fast as possible.”
- From Utility Dive: Data centers could bring alternative battery types into the mainstream — “Alternatives like flow batteries…can support a high number of charge-discharge cycles with minimal performance degradation over time. This makes them particularly well-suited to applications [like AI data centers] where long-term durability and cycling capability are critical.”
Aqueous Battery Expansion
Aqueous battery projects are making strides.

- FlexBase Group and Flow Batteries Europe (FBE) are collaborating on an unprecedented 800MW and 1.6GWh flow-battery at a cross-border grid hub where Germany, France and Switzerland converge. Construction is already underway. (Source: BEST Magazine)
Legislative Hope
From ESS News: Elements of Republicans’ Budget Reconciliation Bill for the U.S. Senate would spare tax credits focused on energy storage investments.
